Feel so fortunate to see some incredible bands, including the iconic Rage Against The Machine, which was probably the highlight of all the BDO I went to. I also remember the addition of no one having phones to record the gigs, which equalled a much more interactive, energised crowd. Mind you…how could you not be energised by Rage! Equal parts terrifying and exciting.
Miss it so much. Still the most intense Living End moshpit I've ever been in. Kylie was "hanging out on top of the pro-skater bowl with Tas Pappas watching Ministry. Kelly recalls "the swimming pool exploding at the Melbourne BDO…water went everywhere".
Jenni remembers "being covered in mud embracing the mud dancing but a very excitable and exuberant cross between dancing and leaping and jumping to TISM I guarded the grog for the main bar at that Big Day Out the one with Prodigy.
That was my job, just me sitting with pallets and pallets of beer, wine and spirits for about hours. He was 15 years-old in this photograph. I love it. Frozen in time. The whole image is so alive for me. I can feel it.
Smell it. The airborne Greenpeace ball and the airborne crowd surfer. Then there is the old SCG stadium as the back drop, the sea of punters and the black and white film that has frozen it all, capturing something of what we feel in the ephemeral moment. This was the Big Day Out in Melbourne.
Often you can't see it, but you can feel it. Looking around, I noticed they were looking above to the stage roof. A guy had made his way up there and ever so quickly had swung himself doing a summersault into the crowd. The photo shows him mid action and, if you look to the side, you can see the security guy.
He summersaulted too quickly for them all!! If you take a good look into this photo you can see and feel that moment. Imagine it, 4. Nothing else exists and everything is possible. Since my Take 5 with Zan, someone has messaged saying she was standing next to where he landed, and he was unscathed!
Finding beautiful light like this afternoon summer warmth was something that I learnt from the years of going back to the same venues.
